—A file can have more than one member

— A member has its own associated data and access path

— Record format and access path for all members belonging to a file are same and defined at the time of creation of the file

— By  default a database file has one member, added at time of creation of file

— Different members are used to store different smaller sets of records

— Can be accessed by specifying member name along with file name
